I just finished the book "Food Rules" by Michel Pollan. I discovered this incredible writer/journalist earlier this year. He released an audiobook on caffeine which fascinated me and made me want to stop drinking coffee for 30 days.

"Food Rules" is a little 100-page book that can be read in one go. Michael explains in a very simple way the main principles of nutrition that we should all know (and apply in our lives). Eating in our time has gotten complicated. Most of us have come to rely on experts of one kind or another to tell us how to eat—doctors and diet books, media accounts of the latest findings in nutritional science, government advisories and food pyramids, the proliferating health claims on food packages.

How odd is it that everybody now has at least a passing acquaintance with words like “antioxidant,” “saturated fat,” “omega-3 fatty acids,” “carbohydrates,” “polyphenols,” “folic acid,” “gluten,” and “probiotics”? It’s gotten to the point where we don’t see foods anymore but instead look right through them to the nutrients (good and bad) they contain, and of course to the calories—all these invisible qualities in our food that, properly understood, supposedly hold the secret to eating well.

The book gives us 64 practical advices to follow and I will share my favorites with you:

  • Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

  • Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.

  • Avoid food products containing ingredients that no ordinary human would keep in the pantry.

  • Avoid food products that contain high-fructose corn syrup.

  • Avoid food products that contain more than five ingredients.

  • Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce.

  • Avoid foods you see advertised on television.

  • Eat only foods that have been cooked by humans.

  • Don’t ingest foods made in places where everyone is required to wear a surgical cap.

  • It’s not food if it arrived through the window of your car.

  • Eat your colors.

  • Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk.

  • Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.

  • Pay more, eat less.

  • Stop eating before you’re full.

  • Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored.

  • Spend as much time enjoying the meal as it took to prepare it.

  • Don’t get your fuel from the same place your car does.

It’s been rumored for months, but late last night President Trump actually said the words out loud:

“As far as TikTok is concerned we’re banning them from the United States,” he told reporters on Air Force One. “I will sign the document tomorrow,” aka today. It’s not clear what authority the president will use to ban one of the world’s most popular social media apps from operating in the U.S., but Bloomberg says it'll be through executive order or under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
