Why not? Because seeking is the very antithesis of happiness. Happiness is always elusive, whereas liberation from inner misery is possible right away, by facing what is rather than by inventing stories about it. Inner misery hides your natural state of well-being and inner peace, which are the natural source of true happiness.
I'm in the middle of reading Eckhart Tolle's latest book “Nouvelle Terre : l’avènement de la conscience humaine”, it's fascinating!
He takes an honest look at the current state of humanity. He implores us to see and accept that this state, based on a mistaken identification with the ego and the mind, borders on dangerous madness.
I like this passage in the book which explains that seeking happiness is the antithesis of happiness. From the moment you are in search of something, it means that you are not in the state you are looking for. This is in line with the teachings received during vipassana.
Happiness is already inside, one does not need to "go looking for it".
If you are unhappy, you must first acknowledge it. But do not say "I am unhappy", for this inner unhappiness has nothing to do with who you are. Say, "There is unhappiness in me." Then observe. It may be that a situation you find yourself in has something to do with your unhappiness. Then you'll have to take action to change the situation or get out of it. If there is nothing you can do, face the situation and say,
"Okay, now that's the way it is. I can either accept it or I can make life impossible for myself.”
